I'm preparing myself to battle the second gym leader, Gardenia, which means grass Pokémon. Grass is strong against water, which is a shame because the areas leading up to Eterna City are full of water Pokémon, and you can see that my collection is full of them: Pingu, Rage, Pinky, Slinky, and Psyder are all water-types, and Crystal is a rock/ground-type, which is doubly weak against grass. As far as things that are strong against grass, Silver is normal/flying, which is well protected, and Jazz is poison/flying, which is extra well protected. The problem is that Jazz is only level 9, so he's probably going to need at least 11 more levels, and Zubat really sucks, so he's hard to level up. But he'll learn Wing Attack at level 17, which is a flying attack, and grass-types are weak against that. As a grass-type, Buddy is strong against other grass attacks, and I taught him Cut, so he has at least one non-grass attack of his own. I'll also be training up Spike, because he's a ripe old level 11, and will quickly evolve. I don't know whether he'll turn into a Beautifly or a Dustox, but both get Gust at level 13, which is another of those all-important flying attacks, and both are extra tough against grass attacks.

...Turned out that Spike evolved into a Silcoon, then a Beautifly. So yay, he has Gust, a much needed flying attack. Also, I caught a Ponyta, a male named Ted, who will serve well in filling my fire needs. And I traded a spare Buizel for a female Chatot named Charap, another normal/flying-type, which will gain XP at an accelerated rate. So I'm thinking my team against Gardenia will be Silver, Charap, Ted, Spike, Buddy, and Jazz. Just gotta level 'em all up.

...Caught a female Meditite and named her Brianna. She stays in The Box for now.

...Jazz finally hit level 13 and learned the Bite attack. Hopefully, that will allow me to actually use him in battle instead of letting him syphon XP from others with Exp. Share.

...Obtained a male Combee named Drone from sweet, sweet honey.

...I forgot about the thing where traded Pokémon don't give you no respect, no respect at all, unless you have certain numbers of badges. So Charap started to snub me once she hit level 10. Guess she won't be part of my Gardenia party. I've replaced her with Drone.

I'm training up Drone. He started at level 8, but Eterna Forest is full of level 10-12 bug-types that his Gust attack can take care of easily, each netting over 100 XP, so he's gaining levels every battle or two. Combee gains levels quickly, it seems. After maybe 15 minutes, he's already at level 11.

...After training Spike, Jazz, and Drone up to level 15, and Silver up to 18, I decided to try the Eterna Gym. I was expecting to face Pokémon around level 20 when I fought Gardenia herself, and just a bit lower from her minions. Spike and Drone went up to level 17 as I fought said minions (with a quick trip to Eterna Forest for a few extra XP to put them over the top), and I was actually able to defeat Gardenia using those two alone. Drone defeated the first opponent, a level 19 Cherubi, single-handedly, but was brought to the brink of death thanks to Leech Seed, a grass attack that deals non-grass damage each turn, thus slipping through Drone's immunities. Drone was knocked out by the continuing leeching early in the battle with opponent #2, a level 19 Turtwig. I switched to Spike, who defeated Turtwig without much difficulty, as Turtwig wasted time with Reflect and Withdraw, neither of which affected Spike's ability to Gust, and the few Razor Leafs it managed did not deal significant damage. The final opponent, a level 22 Roserade, had me worried, because it was like five levels higher than Spike. And it had an attack - Grass Knot, I believe - that was dealing about 11 damage per hit. Fortunately for me, it also stopped to use Stun Spore, which was thwarted by the Cheri Berry I gave Spike before the battle; Poison Sting, which failed to poison; Magical Leaf and Mega Drain, which didn't do much damage; and Gardenia also used a Super Potion, which was a fairly major setback to me, almost resetting Roserade's HP to full. Spike couldn't have survived repeated Grass Knots, but even if he had been knocked out, I still had Silver waiting. And even if she was somehow defeated, I could have cleaned up the remaining mess with Jazz, Ted, or even Buddy. I prepared well, it seems. But a simple strategy of nonstop Gusts won the day, and I now have my second badge.

Armed with the ability to use Cut outside of battle, I ventured into the Team Galactic headquarters in Eterna, where they are apparently stealing Pokémon and the manager of the bicycle shop went and didn't return. I cruised through nicely, training up Pingu, Drone, and Zap, and got Buddy to evolve into a Roselia. Then I met the boss, Commander Jupiter, who was armed with a level 20 Skuntank. My Pokémon are all level 18 at this point, and I would have had things well in hand except for one thing: Skuntank has an attack called Night Slash that basically knocked out every Pokémon I threw against it in one hit. As I type this, my Internet connection isn't working, so I can't look up what Night Slash does, but I know it dealt 46 damage to Silver. After destroying Silver, Drone, Zap, and Buddy, the Night Slash finally did not deal lethal damage to Spike (leading me to wonder what the attack's damage is based on), and at this point, Skuntank's HP was low enough that Spike could finish it off. That one Skuntank, thanks to that one attack, was more difficult than all of Gardenia's Pokémon combined.

...Got the Bicycle from the manager guy, and started down the Cycling Road. But I have to work a bit early tomorrow, so I'm gonna close it down for now so I can get some sleep.

Didn't play the game, but did look up Night Slash online. It has a high critical hit level and deals a lot of damage, but what I found interesting is that Skuntank, and its younger version Stunky, both learn it at level 31. What's more, it is not available to Skuntank via breeding, and does not come in a TM. So basically, this level 20 Skuntank knew an attack it wasn't supposed to know for eleven more levels for no good reason.

Caught a female Stunky and named her Magic (of course), and also a Bronzor that I named Bronz0r (Bronzor don't have genders). And I caught an extra Stunky to trade for a Glameow. Oh, then I went into the Old Chateau and caught a male Gastly. I named him Zuul, then remembered that Zuul was the female character in Ghostbusters. Or maybe Zuul itself had no gender, taking Sigourney Weaver at random. Or maybe it needed a female host to properly be the Gatekeeper. Man, I haven't seen Ghostbusters in years, leave me alone. Anyway, not a lot to announce in the plot-forwarding department.

It's been awhile since my last entry, because I mostly just trained. I did catch a couple of new Pokemon, though. First I caught a female Machop named Elizabeth, and then I caught another one and traded it to a girl in Oreburgh for a male Abra named Kazza. It only knows Teleport, though, so it's gonna have to leech off of Exp. Share for awhile.

Ventured to Hearthome City today, and learned all about contests. Also picked up an egg, as well as a Poffin Case and a Berry Checker. Then I wandered around a bit and caught a male Mime Jr. named Red and a female Chansey named Joy. In addition, Kazza evolved into a Kadabra and learned Confusion, which makes him a powerhouse. His Special Attack seems to be very high, as he inflicts a lot of damage with that Confusion attack.

I've mostly been training my Pokémon over the past few days, though I did move on to Solaceon and Pastoria. I haven't really forwarded the plot much yet, but I have obtained some new Pokémon:

  • A female Burmy named Dryad.
  • A male Wooper named Woot.
  • A male Chingling named Tingle.
  • A female Pichu named Shocka.
  • Also, my egg hatched into a female Happiny named Glee.

...Went into the marsh in Pastoria and caught a male Marill named Blu, followed by a male Skorupi named Al. Then I decided to try fishing in the marsh's pools, and caught a female Barboach named Katrina.
